Description:

In this class we will develop a rather pessimistic understanding of life and love as a flow of destruction, chaos and beauty. We will consider psychoanalytic conception of childhood as intrinsically connected with traumatization and will further broaden Malabou’s account of destructive plasticity.  We will also make an attempt to depatolize stress and depression, perceiving both as fundamentally important life experiences. Furthermore, we will substitute sexuality (seen in traditional psychoanalysis as a core of human being) with more scientifically sound concept of sociality and will present it as driven by a traumatic experience. The course will focus on six key concepts: trauma, childhood, love, stress, destructive plasticity, sexuality, sociality.

Course Prerequisites:

Although this is a graduate course, advanced undergraduate students are also welcome. Some basic knowledge in psychoanalysis is desirable but not required.
